Ethan is a young New Yorker and member of Guardian of the Sea’s activist crew.
The manuscript describes him as lanky and wearing wire-rimmed glasses. During the boarding, the kidnappers discover that his father is a senior executive at a Manhattan investment firm. Ethan’s frightened honesty reveals the extent of his family’s wealth, immediately making him a ransom target. He is bound and later taken from Guardian of the Sea alongside Maya.
Unlike Maya, Ethan has no reservoir of family stories, military lessons, or practiced defiance to draw upon. His fear is visible. He trembles during the interrogation, worries that their captors will kill them, and repeatedly looks to Maya for reassurance.
That does not make him weak.
