Why I Write

What kind of story is worth writing about?

Every Story Begins
Long Before the First Page

People often assume books begin with an idea.
Mine didn't. They began with a question.

What kind of life is worth living, or even more importantly, worth writing about?

That question has followed me through flying. Through the Navy. Through raising children. Through difficult seasons. Through remarkable friendships. Through restoring Dream Maker. Through writing. And through countless horizons that changed me far more than I expected.

Eventually, I realized something.

I wasn't writing about sailing.

I was writing about becoming.

I Never Set Out to Become a Novelist

If someone had told me twenty years ago that I would someday write novels set throughout the Caribbean... I probably would have laughed.

Life rarely follows the charts we draw for it. It unfolds one decision at a time. One opportunity. One friendship. One unexpected horizon.

Writing arrived much the same way. Not because I dreamed of becoming an author. Because I discovered stories I couldn't keep to myself.

Flying Taught Me One Kind of Freedom

The sea taught me another.

For much of my life I experienced the world from above. As a Navy aviator. As a professional pilot. Flying taught me discipline. Preparation. Responsibility. The importance of calm decisions under pressure. It taught me that confidence is earned. Never assumed.

But eventually another horizon appeared. One measured not in altitude... But in depth. The sea slowed me down. She taught me to notice. To listen. To wait. To appreciate the remarkable places that cannot be rushed.

Together... Flying and sailing shaped how I understand adventure. Not as excitement. But as transformation.

Dream Maker in Caribbean Harbor

Then Came Dream Maker

Most people see a beautiful sailboat. I see years. Years of restoration. Years of learning. Years of mistakes. Years of choosing not to quit.

Dream Maker became much more than a boat. She quietly became a teacher. She reminded me that worthwhile things are rarely built quickly. That restoration demands patience. That hope often looks like ordinary work repeated faithfully over time.

Eventually I realized... Dream Maker wasn't simply being restored. So was I.

Why I Write Fiction

The stories are fictional. The people are inspired by real people. The places are real. The cultures are real. The beauty is real. The struggles are real. The hope is real.

The adventures are imagined. The possibilities are not.

I chose fiction because stories often reach places that arguments never can. A reader may resist advice. Very few people resist a good story. Stories quietly lower the drawbridge. Then invite us inside.

What I Hope You'll Discover

I don't hope readers finish one of my novels thinking... "What an incredible adventure." Although I hope they enjoy every page.

I hope something quieter happens. I hope they begin asking themselves different questions. What have I been postponing? Who matters most? What is worth restoring? Where is my next horizon? Because if those questions begin following someone after the final page... Then the story has truly begun.

Why the Caribbean

People often ask why so many of these stories unfold throughout the Caribbean.

The answer is surprisingly simple. Because beauty has a way of reminding us who we are. The islands are breathtaking. But they are also deeply human. Filled with remarkable history. Rich cultures. Generous people. Unexpected lessons.

The Caribbean is not simply where the stories happen. It is one of the characters. Every island whispers something different. Every anchorage teaches something new.

Great Friends / Great Crew

Why Relationships Matter So Much

If there is one lesson life continues teaching me... It is this.

Nothing meaningful is accomplished alone. Every important chapter of my life has been shaped by other people. Family. Friends. Mentors. Crew. The people who challenged me. The people who believed in me. The people who forgave me. The people who quietly changed who I was becoming without ever trying to.

That is why relationships sit at the center of every Sailing Dream Maker story.

Adventure is wonderful. But shared adventure changes us.

Hope, Courage, Adventure, and Home at Sunset

Why This Website Exists

This website was never meant to become a place where people learn about me. It exists so people can remember something about themselves. That courage is still possible. That hope deserves protecting. That remarkable people still exist. That meaningful dreams are worth pursuing.

If, somewhere along the way, my stories help someone recognize those things... Then they've accomplished everything I hoped they would.

Sunset Stroll Along the Beach

What I Believe About Success

Books will sell. Or they won't.

Followers will come. Or they won't.

Algorithms will change. Markets will change. The world will keep changing. Those things matter. But they are not how I hope to measure this journey.

I hope to measure it one story at a time. One conversation at a time. One relationship at a time. One ordinary person deciding to become just a little more courageous because something they encountered here reminded them they could.

If We Ever Meet

I hope we don't spend much time talking about me. I'd rather hear your story.

I'd rather hear about the dream you've been postponing. The place that changed your life. The person who became part of your crew. The thing you're trying to restore. Because those conversations have always interested me far more than talking about myself.

Every remarkable person I've ever met has carried a story worth hearing. I suspect you do too.

Why I Keep Writing

People sometimes ask where the ideas come from.

The truth is...

They come from paying attention. To people. To places. To storms. To restoration. To quiet conversations. To ordinary moments that reveal extraordinary truths.

As long as life continues offering those moments... I'll keep writing. Not because I have all the answers. Because I keep discovering better questions.

One Final Thought

If, years from now... You remember none of my name... None of my books... None of the characters... I won't mind. If instead you remember that there is still another horizon waiting... That meaningful relationships are worth protecting... That courage is a choice... That restoration is possible... And that ordinary people really are capable of extraordinary lives... Then these stories have already done everything I ever hoped they would.
